Nanny Falls, Moore Town Portland (Folly Lighthouse) (Tooba Spring)
Nanny Falls I always wanted to visit Nanny Falls but never seems to have company to go so I decided to save it for last. About a month ago I saw a flier on Instagram advertising a trip there. I messaged and asked a question but not long after I totally forgot about it. Too many waterfalls rushing through my mind and I wanna see the unique ones first lol. Plus This month (April) has been really good to me. I've seen some new waterfalls Big River (Lime Hall) and Marston Spring (Spanish River). I also revisited Stewart Mountain. I also got some beach days in and I finally got a good photo of the waterfalls in Ocho Rios, so as you can see it's been a perfect month for me. |
Nanny Falls Fast-forward to April 21, the host for the trip I messaged about a month back reached out to me two days before the trip to offer me an exclusive deal. I don't like doing much on my sabbath however I accepted the offer, bear in mind that I've never gone on a bus trip with people I don't know. Plus the weather wasn't looking pretty for an adventure this made me extremely anxious, but I was itching for an adventure. On that same day I saw a spot I wanted to visit ASAP I spent few hours asking questions and doing researching on how to find it, which I did but I didn't wanted to go alone. April 23, 2022 came which was the day of the trod, I met with the trekkers in Half Way Tree and we introduced ourselves. Matthew and I started chatting while waiting for the bus to pick us up. I was still nervous but that quickly went away once we boarded the bus and headed for Portland. Matthew and I sat side by side on the journey. He's an introvert who makes beautiful gemstones and jewelry. Check him out on Instagram Crystal_Box. |

Thanks to Matthew for these beautiful shots I got by the lighthouse, did I mention that he is also a photographer? However I was in no hurry to leave Folly but it was getting late so we left for the official destination, Nanny Falls located in the lush green hills of Moore Town, home to national heroine Nanny of The Maroons where we had an experience tour with Kromanti. The winding journey to Moore Town was cool and refreshing, however the natural cool breeze didn't last long due to the downpour of rain, we had to close back the bus windows, in order to keep the inside from getting wet. The rain was expected, I honestly thought it would rain all day but God was on my side and he wanted me to enjoy the day. Upon entering the community of Moore Town our guides Murace and Chris met us. By the time we were all out the bus the rain eased up and in no time we were trodding and experiencing the tour, learning about their culture, naming plants and herbs. They also explained how certain plants work and why they are used. I even ate a piece of a plant called wild cane, it tasted like green apple. Today I learnt that the old Nanny Town is over that hill in the background and Moore Town is the new Nanny Town. That's not in our history books all they said was that the name was changed to Moore Town... Hmm two different locations. My guess is that they did not like where they lived so they relocated to this side of the mountain, settled and changed their name. The tour guide also said that Nanny did not came here as a slave, very interesting because history has it that she was captured from Ghana and brought here as a slave. However when she got here she escaped and ran away into the hills of Portland. No one really knows when she was born or how she even looked. There are several versions to her story, if you want to learn more about her do some research and then take a tour with Nanny Falls Tour or Kromanti Experience Tours. The hike to Nanny Falls was a walk in the park. Anyone can visit this gem, we passed many streams and I was curious so I kept asking about waterfalls. Turns out that one of the streams had one, how sweet I was feeling like a child in a candy store. While Chris took the group to Nanny Falls Maurace and I walked up stream for about one minute and BOOM we were standing face to face with another precious gem. Maurace said they call it Tooba Spring, however I'm calling it Crayfish Falls because as soon as I stepped in the water they attacked and started eating my feet. I didn't get to enjoy much of this gem because of the Crayfishes that were eating me alive. I snapped some photos and then headed back down the stream once I was back on the track. The great Nanny Falls was like a minute away. I hurried down the steps holding onto the rope railings to catch up with the group. Getting down to this gem would be almost like a suicide mission if they didn't build steps and used ropes for railings. At the end of the steps the river formed a natural pool, due to the heavy rains beating over the island these past days. None of the photos I saw on the internet did not prepared me for this beauty. I was blown away, literally. I don't ever recall seeing photos of it when it was raining heavily, the air was mist which made it hard to capture great photos. I had to leave my camera in the bag and hide it beside a rock. At this point I didn't know who had my phone so I started enjoying the waterfall while the others used my phone for photos. Once it got back to me I tried to get some photos and videos but you know what? I won't complain about the photos because some of them turned out really great even with the mist all around us. Thanks to Chris I will not complain about my phone camera photos today lol. Nanny Falls exceeded my expectations, it was so heavenly just like something out of a movie. The milky white flow from this magnificent waterfall was powerful but harmless. You can actually walk behind the waterfall. Not only that, there is a huge rock in the natural pool area that is somewhat flat-ish. The gushing flow of the river around it made it look like a floating bed in the middle of the water. The beauty of this place didn’t stop there, the river flows between two huge rocks and forms a second cascade, Wild Cane River is truly special. This second waterfall is called Fish Dunns, wow another Fish Dunn, the one in Spring Hill used to be one of my favorite's. There is also another one on Dry River in the Millbank's area. Do you know why they call waterfalls Fish Dunn? This was so amazing I was in waterfall heaven again! Three for one, I am happy that I went on this trod and got to experience this little slice of heaven in the rain. Thank you Peda for this great trod. It was a vibe, I blended right in, it felt like all of us went to primary school together. The conversations were knowledgeable. It's great meeting people who share your views, especially the ones with Peter and Pawdie. There was also another Tifaney (Tiffany) on the trip but she spells her name Tiffani, another great personally. From now on I might start doing some bus trips because I enjoyed this trip, it was a vibe but I think I said that already lol. Check out Peda on Instagram The Ragga Trod for great trods and adventures. Last but not least special thanks to K. Oconnor for making this trip possible. As usual you can always catch me on the go over on Instagram Sugardrops2311.
