Marston Spring, Spanish River (Mabess River) Portland

Marston S

Back in 2020 Kyle told me about a waterfall on the Spanish River, but couldn't find proper photos of it to show me so I added it to my list and moved on. In November of last year he found the photos and sent them to me; however, it was in Portland and I didn't want to go alone. My friends said it didn't look like much and they weren't interested in visiting it. Fast forward to two weeks ago they finally decided that they wanted to see it so we made plans for April 10th, 2022. Kyle sent me a pin and I was sure it'd work lol.

Fish Dunns Falls

Once we got to Buff Bay we started using the pin and it took us to Buff Bay Valley. I love this side of Portland. It is filled with waterfalls and is home to a few of my favorites like Fish Dunn Falls and Cascade. Fish Dunn was our first stop, we asked the guy in charge of Fish Dunn if he knew of Mabess on the Spanish River, however he told us that we had to turn back cause what we were looking for isn't in that area but I was somewhat sure that one of the turn off was connected to the community we were heading to. Eventually we turned back when I made a connection with a IG friend of mine who recently went to the area we were looking for. Big up yuh self Brent! We found the area with ease after speaking to Brent once we got to the community. Only a few persons were in sight and none seemed to know where the waterfall was SMH. Why am I not surprised? Eventually one guy on a bicycle knew it and told us to turn right and drive until we got to the old foot bridge. He also told us that we'd see people we could ask or we could park at the old bridge and walk along the river we'll see it. while driving to the old bridge I only remember passing one unfinished building and the only thing I saw was cows and goats lol.

Nevertheless we did as we were told and walked along the river. I didn't know roads could be abandoned until today. There was a whole ass road that was no longer in use but is perfect for 4 wheel drive. This never seemed to be ending, the road was now someone's cow pen! I wondered what this place looked like before the people got up and left. I also think this was the road that linked back to Buff Bay Valley that the pin Kyle sent me was leading me to this morning. About five minutes into our walk we saw a little track leading down into the river but decided to walk further to see what was going on in the area and maybe try to find out why the road was abandoned. After about half an hour of walking we decided to turn back because there were no signs of a waterfall. We checked back on the pin Kyle sent me and it showed that we were close to the location. When we got back to the little track we passed it showed that we were standing on the pin so we went down into the river. Once we were in the river bed, I saw two springs colliding with the Spanish River, one was dry and the other was flowing so naturally I checked the one with water flowing. After about a minute or two I found heaven.

A series of cascades, descending over rocks from what I could see each time one fell from a natural pool perfect for swimming and diving, then falling again into another pool. This was so dope and unique. I climbed over huge boulders above the smaller waterfalls and got to the bottom of the spot that I originally sat out to see. Two taller cascades from two different streams rush down into a breathtaking pool, with a unique rock in the middle, picture perfect I thought. These two streams formed the smaller  series of cascades. From the bottom looking up you can't see that there's a stream on the right, It is actually the tallest of them all. God is good. I love his work and what he did with the rivers, streams especially the waterfalls on the streams / river and you know I love the ocean.

Sadly I didn't get much footage and photos of myself because my camera battery was dead. Hmm this reminds me of when we went to Swift River Falls and my camera battery was dead SMH I checked it the night before and it was fully changed but when I got there it was dead! For some strange reason my iPhone takes ugly photos or maybe I don't know how to get it to take great photos, I'll look into that.
